Product Description

GHITEX TYPE1 is a BBA/HAPAS approved Type 1 High Friction Surfacing material that conforms to Clause 924 of the Specification for Highway Works. BBA Certificate No. 04/H088.

It consists of a thermoplastic polymer modified rosin ester binder with base fillers and 100% calcined bauxite aggregate. (PSV 70+) and is manually applied hot using a screed shoe at temperatures between 180°c - 200°c. The finished surface is 4mm to 6mm thick and when used in an appropriate location as defined in the Guidelines Document for the Assessment and Certification of High Friction Surfaces for Highways should have a service life of between 5 and 10 years.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

HITEX TYPE 1 is suitable for all classes of road where high skid resistance is required. It is particularly suitable for use on black-top surfaces with texture depths of between 0.5mm and 2.0mm and can be used on bends, junctions, roundabouts and pedestrian crossing approaches. It can be used in high stress areas and on highly trafficked roads (up to 3,500 commercial vehicles per day) such as motorway slip roads and busy trunk roads.

BINDER

HITEX TYPE 1 Binder is a blend of modified rosin ester, process oil, thermoplastic rubber and ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer.

AGGREGATE

Dark HITEX TYPE 1 contains 100% Chinese grey calcined bauxite aggregate (illustrated overleaf) Hitex Type 1 is also available coloured buff containing 100% Chinese buff calcined bauxite.

PACKAGING

Hitex Type 1 is supplied in 25kg fine plastic meltable bags on 1 tonne pallets (40bags per pallet). 1.25 tonne pallets are available by request (50 bags per pallet).

PREPARATION & APPLICATION

Prior to application the surface must be clean, dry and free of dust and laitance and foreign matter such as salt and oil. It is recommended that the surface be cleaned using Hot Compressed Air (HCA). Road marking can be covered, masked or removed prior to laying according to the Engineer’s instruction.

The bags should be loaded into a preheat mixer fitted with thermal controls. The material must be agitated to avoid aggregate and binder segregation. After melting and mixing the material should be laid at between 180˚c - 200˚c by screed shoe 200mm to 600mm wide. Spread rate will vary according to road surface but should be between 80m² and 90m². Initial texture depth of the finished surface is typically 1.5mm with an initial minimum Skid Resistance Value of 70 (SRV) when measured with a pendulum tester.

AFTERCARE

HITEX TYPE 1 can be trafficked once it has cooled to 35˚c, typically 15 to 20 minutes after application. This period may need to be extended in hot weather. New sites should be monitored for loose aggregate and mechanically swept if required.

COLOUR

HITEX TYPE 1 comes in two colours, dark/grey and buff. Approved pigments may be added to the mix to produce a range of colours including Red, Green, Yellow and Blue. It is important to appreciate that with wear the natural aggregate colour will show through. Dark grey base is recommended for Red pigmentation and buff base is recommended for yellow. Hitex’s ColouredTex range of products uses naturally coloured high PSV aggregates selected to ensure better colour retention with a high Skid Resistance Value.
